The International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) routinely operates two scientific ocean drilling platforms: the U.S.-operated JOIDES Resolution and the Japanese-operated Chikyu. In addition, mission specific platforms (MSPs) are used for drilling in uniquely challenging environments such as the Arctic or shallow coral reefs.
