A new decade of international scientific ocean drilling began on October 1, 2013. Known as the International Ocean Discovery Program, this program is succeeding forty years of accomplishments forged by the Deep Sea Drilling Program (DSDP), the Ocean Drilling Program (ODP), and the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) by bringing together researchers from the Earth, ocean atmospheric and life sciences with the common goal of understanding the Earth’s past, present and future. To achieve its aims, the new program is drawing on information from beneath the ocean floor, brought to the surface by ocean coring technologies and borehole observatories. This webpage archives some of the planning efforts for International Ocean Discovery Program. We will continue to publish updates as they occur.

Science Plan and Resources

• The Science Plan for the International Ocean Discovery Program was published in June 2011. The community produced this compelling document to describe the multidisciplinary, international, collaborative research planned for the 2013 to 2023 period.
• The Science Plan Summary is a shortened version of the full science.
• A PowerPoint presentation about the new science plan is available for download and use. It provides a summary of the planned program and detailed information about each of the challenges.
