The U.S. Science Support Program (USSSP) provides several research opportunities for graduate students in the marine geosciences.

SCHLANGER OCEAN DRILLING FELLOWSHIP
The Schlanger Ocean Drilling Fellowship program offers merit-based awards for outstanding graduate students to conduct research related to the International Ocean Discovery Program and its predecessor programs. Research may be directed toward the objectives of upcoming or past expeditions or may address broader themes. Selected fellows receive an award of $30,000 to be used for stipend, research, or other approved costs. Applicants must be enrolled in either a PhD or MS program at any U.S. institution, including those that have had little or no previous involvement in scientific ocean drilling. Applications are accepted on a yearly deadline of November 15.

APPLY TO SAIL
Graduate students are eligible to participate as science party members on IODP expeditions. All U.S.-affiliated science party members receive salary support for their participation from USSSP and they may apply for additional post-expedition funds. Calls for applications to sail are distributed electronically via the US-IODP listserve and printed in trade journals.

ATTEND A WORKSHOP
Ocean Leadership sponsors workshops to develop new ideas in studying the Earth via scientific ocean drilling, to engage new communities in the program, and to synthesize results of past expeditions. Financial support is often available to help graduate students attend these workshops. To receive workshop announcements and news about other opportunities, join the US-IODP listserve.
